A Complete Guide

Personalised Jewellery in New Zealand - A complete guide by KJdesigns

Meaningful jewellery made just for you

At KJdesigns Handstamped Jewellery I create custom jewellery and keepsakes that tell your story.  Whether it's a necklace with your children's names, a keyring with a special date, or a memorial piece to honour a loved one.

Each piece is hand stamped in my rural Cambridge, New Zealand studio, making every item unique and full of character.

What is personalised jewellery?

Personalised jewellery is custom made jewellery that includes names, initials, dates or meaningful words.  It's a beautiful way to celebrate children, family and important moments, and makes a thoughtful gift for friends, family and loved ones.  Unlike mass produced jewellery, personalised pieces are designed specifically for you, making them deeply sentimental and one of a kind.

Common types of personalised jewellery and gifts include:

What is hand stamped jewellery?

Hand stamped jewellery is created by stamping each letter, number or design stamp into the metal by hand with a hammer.  This gives every piece a unique, handmade look and means no two pieces are ever exactly the same.

Hand stamped vs Engraved - what's the difference?

At KJdesigns I specialise in hand stamped jewellery.  Each letter is individually stamped by hand into the metal, creating a slightly organic, imperfect look that customers love.

Handstamped Jewellery:

  • Made by hand, one letter at a time
  • Each piece is unique
  • Has an artisan, handcrafted feel

Engraved Jewellery:

  • Done by machine or laser
  • Uniform and precise
  • Often used for large scale production

Many people choose handstamped jewellery because it feels more personal and handmade.

What can I personalise on jewellery or keepsakes?

Jewellery with Children's Names

Necklaces and bracelets stamped with children's names are some of the most popular personalised jewellery pieces.  Many mums choose to add names, birthdates or small symbols such as hearts or stars.

Memorial and Baby Loss Keepsake Jewellery/Keepsakes

Memorial jewellery can include a loved ones name, date or a short message of rememberance.  Baby loss keepsake jewellery is a gentle way to honour and remember your baby.

Coordinates or Date Jewellery/Keepsakes

Coordinates to remember a special place, or dates to remember a special event is a popular choice to celebrate weddings, anniversaries, new babies or birthdays.

Custom Word or Quote Jewellery/Keepsakes

Inspirational or meaningful words or quotes on jewellery or keepsakes are a beautiful way to stay connected with thoughts and feelings that are important to you.

Personalised Keyrings and Keepsakes

Keyrings, cutlery, guitar picks, wallet cards, candles and keepsakes all make thoughtful gifts for partners, grandparents, children, friends and loved ones.  They can be practical, meaningful, fun, inspirational and sentimental.

Are personalised jewellery and keepsakes a good gift?

Yes, personalised gifts are some of the most meaningful gifts you can give.  It isn't just jewellery or a keyring, it's a tangible memory you can keep with you.  Many Mums and Dads choose personalised jewellery to keep their children close.  Others choose keepsake jewellery, keyrings or keepsakes to remember loved ones, celebrate milestones or mark important life events.

Handstamped Jewellery:

With handstamped jewellery every letter and number is individually stamped using a hammer.  As this is done by hand there will often be slight variation in depth, and position of letters/numbers.  This is what makes each piece unique.  It is considered part of the charm and character of handstamped jewellery and not a defect.  Handstamping is very different from engraving which is a much more uniform finish.

How to best care for your jewellery

All jewellery will have a longer life if it is looked after.  Exposing your jewellery to water, swimming pools, the ocean, moisturisers, perfume etc will all cause wear on your item, and the metals that will tarnish, will do so faster.  The rate of tarnish (for metals that tarnish) will vary from person to person, and place to place.

You can slow the rate of tarnish down by taking your jewellery off in the evenings, and for all metals other than stainless steel (ie copper, brass, sterling silver) you can store them in an airtight plastic bag with an anti tarnish tab.

Stainless steel doesn't tarnish, so can withstand the elements better, but still requires care.

Keep your jewellery clean and dry.

Don't use any chemical cleaners on your jewellery.

For the stainless steel a soft polishing cloth is all you need.  For copper, brass, aluminium & sterling silver, a pro-polish pad is amazing, and a soft cloth can  also help.
