Alzheimers Awareness

Alzheimers Awareness Pendants

Two out of every three New Zealander's is affected by Dementia.

In response to this widespread impact, and a call for more information about dementia, Alzheimers NZ has embarked on a comprehensive awareness raising initiative, supported by the Ministry of Health and Pub Charity, to raise awareness and understanding of dementia in the wider community, and address the stigma people affected by dementia experience, and facilitate better access to information, diagnosis and support services – so that people with dementia get the support they need.

Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a group of conditions that change and damage our brains. Dementia can happen to anyone, but as people get older the chances of developing dementia increase.

The symptoms each person experiences depends on the parts of the brain that are damaged. However, the most common dementia symptoms include changes in memory, thinking, behaviour, personality and emotions that affect a person’s ability to perform everyday tasks and interfere with their everyday lives.

Dementia is progressive, which means that damage will gradually spread through the brain and lead to their symptoms getting worse. Dementia is different for everyone – what they experience, how quickly they are affected is unique to them. And what they can do, remember and understand may change from day to day.

Dementia has affected me personally as my Mum was diagnosed on 14/01/14.  This was also the date that my rainbow baby, Devon was born.  My Mum went straight from receiving her diagnosis, to meeting her new Grandson.  A very emotional day for her.

Through KJdesigns I would like to help to raise awareness, and also raise some much needed funds to help Alzheimers NZ do their important work for our family members affected by this.

$10.00 from the sale of these Awareness Pendants will be going to Alzheimers NZ.  I would like to Thank everyone who purchases one from the bottom of my heart.

You can visit my blog by clicking on the Forget Me Not Pendant - it will take you to the post I wrote in 2014 9 months after my Mums diagnosis with Alzheimers/Dementia.  We felt it had taken us by surprise, though looking back there were lots of clues, but Mum had not asked for help and as she lived by herself we just didn't see it.  2016 see's us 2 years post diagnosis and doing well.
